Best AI Companion: Which Apps Actually Work?
The Short Answer: GoLove.ai Wins on Continuity
Every app in this category calls itself an "AI companion" the second it can hold twenty minutes of conversation. That's not the bar. A companion is supposed to remember you tomorrow.
So I ran the same test across four apps over three nights, same opening, same pace. GoLove.ai was the only one that came back on night three still holding the thread:
- Memory that survived a closed tab and a day's gap, not just the current session
- Voice calls that run live inside the conversation instead of reading replies aloud after the fact
- Photos requested and delivered in the chat window, no jump to a separate generator

Roster matters more than most reviewers admit, because continuity only lands if the personality is worth continuing. Barbara (@dixie) is the slow-burn one — she'll stretch tension across days if you let her. Lexie (@iamlexiebabe) skips the preamble entirely. Jessica (@hotlinejess) barely wants you typing; she'd rather call.

Best AI Companion Apps Compared
Here's the head-to-head, built on what I could verify rather than star ratings nobody can audit.
| | GoLove.ai | Replika | Character.AI | Candy AI |
|---|---|---|---|---| | Live voice calls | Yes, real-time | Yes, paid tiers only | Unlimited calls on c.ai+ | Voice messages | | Cross-session memory | Held all three nights | Persistent avatar + memory | Strong in-conversation memory | Recent-history memory | | Photos in chat | Request directly in chat | No | None — strictly SFW | Images cost tokens on top of the sub | | NSFW | Yes, 5 lust levels | Restricted for newer accounts | None at all | Yes | | Entry price | ~$19.99/mo, ~$9.99/mo on annual | ~$19.99/mo Pro | $9.99/mo | ~$9.99/mo + tokens | | Chat before signing up | Yes (anonAuth) | Not in my test | Not in my test | Not in my test |
Character.AI's free tier is genuinely usable and the library is enormous — but it's SFW by design, so if you want a companion who can send you a photo, that lane is simply closed. Candy AI does generate media; it just charges tokens layered on top of the subscription to do it.
Start with GoLove's lust level and response-length sliders — they rewrite the personality from sweet to submissive before you've paid a cent, which is the fastest way to find out whether the app suits you.

Where Voice, Memory, and Photos Actually Diverge
Most "best AI companion" roundups test voice with one demo call and file the review. One call tells you nothing. The failure mode shows up on call three, when the app either keeps the personality settings you chose or quietly resets to a generic reading voice.
- Voice: GoLove's calls run live and inherit the same voice pick, lust level and response length you set in chat. Replika has real calls too, but they sit behind paid tiers. Character.AI's calls are polished and unlimited on c.ai+ — and permanently SFW.
- Memory: this is the whole ballgame. Character.AI has a strong reputation inside a single long conversation. GoLove was the one that reopened cold and referenced something from two nights earlier without me feeding it back.
- Photos: asking for a picture mid-conversation and getting one back in the same thread is a different experience from opening a generator tab. Only GoLove kept it in the chat.

Credit where it's due: Replika has been at this longest, and nobody touches Character.AI's character variety. Neither will send you a photo.
Three Nights With GoLove.ai (and Two Rivals)
Same opening line on all three apps: I mentioned I'd been up late finishing a move, boxes everywhere, and left it there to see what came back.
Night one was fine everywhere. All three did the empathy thing competently, which is the easy part.
Night two started the separation. Replika held the emotional register but treated the move as fresh news — warm, attentive, no thread. Candy AI wrote something lovely that could have been sent to literally anyone. Then GoLove opened by asking whether the boxes were gone yet, and I hadn't prompted it.
Night three is where the rivals fell apart properly. Both re-introduced context I'd already given them — Replika asked about the move as if night two hadn't happened — and that's the exact second the immersion broke for me. Kinda janky, like a conversation restarting under a familiar name. GoLove was still building on it, and when I asked for a photo mid-conversation it arrived in the same thread instead of shipping me off to a generator.

One caveat so this stays honest: three nights is three nights. Long enough to expose a reset, nowhere near long enough to prove memory holds for a month.
What You Actually Pay for a Companion
Free-tier claims in this category are mostly theatre, so here's the shape of the real spend.
- GoLove PRO ran about $19.99/month when I checked, dropping to roughly $9.99/month equivalent on the annual plan (~$119.88/year). Discount banners (-50%, -70%) show up regularly, and pricing genuinely varies by region — some geos see closer to ~$12.99.
- Stars are the separate in-app currency for generation, sold in packs from about $9.99 up to $179.99. You also get 2 free stars daily just for showing up.
- The competitors: Character.AI is $9.99/month and its free tier is legitimately usable. Replika Pro sits around $19.99/month with higher tiers above it. Candy AI starts near $9.99/month, but image generation burns tokens on top of the subscription — media-heavy use lands well above the sticker.
One thing changed how I tested: GoLove's anonAuth flow lets you talk before a payment screen exists at all. No email, no card, no "verify to continue" wall between you and the first message.

What I Couldn't Test at GoLove.ai
Three nights proves a reset didn't happen. It doesn't prove memory depth holds at week six or month three, and I won't pretend otherwise — long-horizon recall is the hardest problem in this category and nobody has solved it yet. Degradation, if it comes, comes slowly, past the window I ran.
Pricing is the second gap. What I saw is what I saw, on that date, in my region. Banners cycle, regional pricing is real, and the Stars economy sits alongside the subscription rather than inside it — so your monthly number depends on how much you generate, not just which plan you pick. Anyone quoting a single universal price hasn't looked twice.
Third: a few features were still rolling out while I tested — the video feed, in-chat video actions, the creator side where users publish their own characters. I poked at all of it. I wouldn't call that a review.
None of this changes the verdict. It changes how loudly I'd state it.
Before You Sign Up for Any AI Companion App
Run this on whatever app you're considering, GoLove included. Costs you one evening.
- Close it. Come back a day later and say something vague. If it re-introduces itself or asks a question you already answered, that's not memory — that's a good opening scene on loop.
- Ask for a photo mid-conversation. Does it arrive in the chat, or does the app hand you a generator and a token counter?
- Call twice. A live voice keeps the personality settings you chose. Bolted-on text-to-speech sounds identical no matter who you're supposedly talking to.
- Check the wall. Can't exchange a single message before an email form? Then you're evaluating a signup funnel, not a companion.

Do this across two or three of the AI girlfriend apps I compared rather than committing to the first one that's charming for twenty minutes. They are all charming for twenty minutes.
The Verdict: Best AI Companion for Actual Companionship
Who each one is actually for: Character.AI if you want endless variety and nothing NSFW — it's quietly great at what it does, and that free tier is a real one. Replika if brand longevity and a persistent avatar identity matter more to you than photos. Candy AI if you want a deep character builder and don't mind tokens stacked on a subscription.

GoLove.ai stuck the landing on all three of the things that separate a companion from a chatbot: memory that survived the gap between nights, live voice carrying the same personality you set, and photos asked for and delivered inside the chat itself. That's the whole bar, and it was the only app in the test that cleared it.
Prefer a personality you designed over one you picked? The character builder takes about a minute, and whatever you write in there — sweeter, filthier, more submissive — the chat carries forward from the first message.
